Loose Connections

Posted by on July 24, 2012  |  No Comments

I think  just about everyone has had a situation where a light is flickering, or an electronic device starts and stops and appears to keep crashing. You find you have to go directly to the power source and secure the connection.

This is what all of us will experience with our loving Father if we don’t remain in Him. We have got to be plugged in. So many of us have floated along from day to day and are under the impression that things are pretty good. And then the power goes out. And we are in the dark.

Regardless of the sin temptation, we cannot afford to only have a partial connection to Jesus. And sometimes it’s not so much a sin temptation as it is a general feeling of not belonging, or not realizing our individual value in the face of adversity from others. Sometimes we might even be on the right track or be the right influence that God wants us to be on someone, but because they don’t receive our help and suggestions with open arms, we retreat or feel slighted.

If we remain in Jesus, we need never feel disconnected. He promises to supply all our strength.  Walking with God isn’t always a plush green grassy pathway. He allows us to be tested. And we can be sure that as long as we are in this world, the tests will continue to flourish.

When we have been anchored in a sin pattern such as I was in homosexuality for a long time, Satan is desperate to discourage, tempt and regain control. I can be certain that he will be shooting the fiery arrows at me continuously. These can come in many different flavors. Sensual temptation, self doubt, worthlessness, loneliness, rejection, alienation, and the list goes on. Satan is angry when someone is working for God and seeking to win the hearts of others who are in bondage to Him.

Speaking for Christ and deliverance seems to draw even more fire. Without a constant abiding in Him, I would falter. It is in this realization that He beckons me to come before His cross daily seeking forgiveness of my twisted thoughts and unrighteousness. In this I find humility. Self seems to rise so quickly. In this continual realization I often wonder if others recognize how crucial it is to be continually abiding in Him.

I often gain strength in reading this passage from Christian writer Ellen White.

We do not earn salvation by our obedience; for salvation is the free gift of God, to be received by faith. But obedience is the fruit of faith. “Ye know that He was manifested to take away our sins; and in Him is no sin. Whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen Him, neither known Him.” 1 John 3:5, 6. Here is the true test. If we abide in Christ, if the love of God dwells in us, our feelings, our thoughts, our purposes, our actions, will be in harmony with the will of God as expressed in the precepts of His holy law.” Steps to Christ Page 61

Come to the cross daily, abide in Him and know your safety and peace in Him.

God bless you as you walk with Him today.

I’m Cured

Posted by on July 11, 2012  |  1 Comment

Recently this comment was made by Alan Chambers, long time president of Exodus International. “For someone to put out a shingle and say, ‘I can cure homosexuality’ — that to me is as bizarre as someone saying they can cure any other common temptation or struggle that anyone faces on Planet Earth.”  Mr Chambers has been scrutinized recently for removing “repartive therapy” books from the collection of books and help resources available through Exodus International.

It is important to keep in context that Mr. Chambers has stated this for many years: “The opposite of homosexuality is not heterosexuality, but holiness.” This has drawn thousands into a relationship with Jesus rather than an expectation of leaving homosexuality to try to be straight. An expectation by many heterosexual Christians as well as the general population as being “the cure.”

Satan doesn’t care how anyone gets caught up in the resurfacing arguments as long as he can take their focus off of Jesus. While some are insisting Mr. Chambers is leading recovering homosexuals away from Jesus, I for one believe He is doing nothing but leading people to Jesus. Notice that the comment he made was in reference to people on earth providing the cure.

So what is meant by “the cure?”  My observation over the last three years is that many expect that if I have been converted and decided to follow Jesus, I have accepted the responsibility of becoming straight. Being baptized … going under the water gay and coming up straight. Wouldn’t every heterosexual Christian who has tried so hard not to even say the word “homosexual,” be overjoyed if such an experience came to fruition. There would be no need to every talk about the struggle, the encouragement that is needed, or the pain and damage that is ours due to our fallen nature. It would be an easy out. But what if it were as simple as that? And what if instead of being attracted to the same gender, I now had an overwhelming desire for women and heterosexual pornography and chasing women with my new found heterosexual inclination?  Are you beginning to see how ridiculous the idea of reparative therapy is when it is for the sole purpose of providing me the heterosexual’s idea of the cure?

In desperation many who have known homosexuality as sin and have sought anything that would make them acceptable in the eyes of the world have succumbed to such therapy only to realize their sensual desires remained in same-sex attraction. Realizing what a failure they were.. a freak of nature… and unacceptable, they have gone so far as to commit suicide or turned their back on Christianity and God and returned to the gay lifestyle. What a travesty!

James 4:7 “Submit yourself and what you are struggling with to God for the power to overcome, to God’s will and the surrender of your life to Him.” “Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God” (Romans 6:12-13 NKJV). We must not only consider ourself dead to sin but also alive to God.

One common meaning of the word “cure” is in the sense that we have arrived at a new level. A 100% healing where there is no temptation or effect of the thorn that was in our side. A miracle. No residue of sin. Healed and made brand new.

Another meaning of “cure” is by means of a process. Ongoing, becoming a New Creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) and letting Jesus lead me through the process of healing by means of being drawn continually to His holiness through abiding in Him and through surrendering to Him each and every moment.   Paul demonstrates to us in Romans as well as other books that he has written about the continual dying to self. The rising up of sin and the putting it to death.

It doesn’t matter whether if  it is a food addiction, a pride issue, same-sex attraction, kleptomania, anger issues, or something else.  The cure is a Jesus matter. Coming to the cross each and every day and surrendering, confessing, giving over of self and letting the blood of Jesus wash me clean.

Holiness… Jesus draws me to Him. Romans 6 tells me not so much about having been cured as it tells me I am now to be a slave to righteousness rather than my past dealing with my sinful nature. Slavery implies belonging and submitting to a master. An ongoing battle that I choose to let Jesus win over and over again.

I implore God’s servants to stop expecting and start involving themselves in the supportive role of pointing sinners to Jesus. Not a prayer here and there. Becoming trained to the process of healing.  Being cured is a processing… just as it is in the preparation of food products such as meat.  A conditioning.

This has been the teaching of Exodus International for many years. It is ludicrous for someone to state that Alan Chambers is employed by the enemy. Many have found Jesus and walk with our dear Savior today due to the efforts and inspiration of the Holy Spirit through Mr. Chambers. I cannot say the same for those who have insisted on therapies and tactics that are not rooted in the Word of God, but are a drive to force people into a mold that makes them acceptable. Acceptable to who?  We are all full of sin. Yet Romans 8:1 tells us that we are not condemned. Even while we were sinners, Jesus died for us and set us free.

For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”

Even in the struggle, the curing process, I believe and proclaim the promises of Jesus.  I don’t tell people I am cured. But I certainly tell them I am in the curing process.  It is a lifetime process.   I can’t be cured by humans.  I know what Mr. Chambers is referring to. I know that even men who have married women after a life of same-sex attraction, continue to turn their same-sex attraction over to Jesus. In this continuous surrendering therein lies the cure.

Thank you Alan Chambers and Exodus International for pointing hungry souls to Jesus.

Don’t Be Duped!

It is not through the obvious that the evil one exhibits so much strength and persuasion.  As soon as we arrive, Satan craftily begin his work to win our allegiance. What better way than to oppress us with feelings that would bring about contrary beliefs and desires as taught by the Almighty.

Such feelings stem from what seems natural and catch like wildfire to those who are unobservant of the truth and power buried in God’s Word which is available to all who will seek and find. These oppressive feelings can become lifestyle and go undetected for years. It is only when the heart is surrendered to Jesus and an invitation is given to our Heavenly Father, that His love and truth become more and more recognizable.  Because of sin, a choice must be made as to whom we will follow. It is easier to let feelings guide us at every turn. A study of the control of feelings will direct you to horrific results. All that displeases and is contrary to God’s law of love ends in disaster.

If would seem that such a simplistic observation would immediately win the souls of those being led by such feelings. Today a cursory scan of both Christian and secular societies will demonstrate the power of the evil one.

“In this degenerate age many will be found who are so blinded to the sinfulness of sin that they choose a licentious life because it suits the natural and perverse inclination of the heart. Instead of facing the mirror of the law of God and bringing their hearts and characters up to God’s standard, they allow Satan’s agents to erect his standard in their hearts. Corrupt men think it easier to misinterpret the Scriptures to sustain them in their iniquity than to yield up their corruption and sin and be pure in heart and life.

There are more men of this stamp than many have imagined, and they will multiply as we draw near the end of time.

When Satan’s bewitching power controls a person, God is forgotten, and man who is filled with corrupt purposes is extolled. Secret licentiousness is practiced by these deceived souls as a virtue. This is a species of witchcraft…. There is always a bewitching power in heresies and in licentiousness. The mind is so deluded that it cannot reason intelligently, and an illusion is continually leading it from purity. The spiritual eyesight becomes blurred, and persons of hitherto untainted morals become confused under the delusive sophistry of those agents of Satan who profess to be messengers of light. It is this delusion which gives these agents power. Should they come out boldly and make their advances openly, they would be repulsed without a moment’s hesitation; but they work first to gain sympathy and secure confidence in themselves as holy, self-sacrificing men of God. As his special messengers they then begin their artful work of drawing away souls from the path of rectitude by attempting to make void the law of God.” – Adventist Home page 329-330

Praise God He has given us the ability and power to choose.  As we pray to Him and acknowledge Him as our Redeemer, He pours out continuous enlightenment and strength to make right decisions. Not based on what we feel, but on the knowledge of His truth and the belief in the Almighty of what we do not feel. When then begin to live on His promises through trust and faith. In this experience He continues to guide and answer prayers.  He shows us incredible mercy and grace while we learn more and more about His incredible life and gift of salvation. He is an awesome God.

Each day we must come before the cross and invite Him to be in charge. Lay your natural feelings of desire that are contrary to His plan for us at the foot of the cross. Exercise restraint and invite Christ to live in your life. He promises His mind and Character to be in us upon our invitation.  It’s not an invitation that can be stated and abated. But one that is continual throughout our every thought and decision.

It puzzles those who do not know Christ as to why we would not live according to the flesh. How simple it would be to go with what feels and comes naturally to us. There is no effort. But our loving God has a higher calling that invokes separation from the mainstream of this decaying world.

So many want to skip over the faith walk. The emphasis is placed on self, self desires and self worship. If we will allow Him, He places a higher calling within us. Lives then begin to change. Jesus is exalted and we are transformed while yet here on this sin filled earth. The pleasures and treasures of earth begin to grow strangely dim because we are looking to Jesus and He brings change to our lives.

We all have opportunity to discover His truth. Self truths and intense feelings would tell me to live as a homosexual. But God’s Word clearly teaches me that this was not God’s plan for me either physiologically or as honor to His well stated plan for those given life. He doesn’t mandate marriage for all. Some have not married, but still lived in the purity of God’s calling to every one of us. His promises are bigger, purer and provide life eternal for those who will honor Him, while dishonor and satisfying self clearly leads to eternal ruin.

“We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them.” 1 John 5:18
